Tootsville: Avatar Outfits

Summary

At RES Interactive, I worked on many aspects of Tootsville, a Flash-based MMORPG game for kids. One of my tasks was creating clothing and accessories for the “Toot” avatar. The game used a 2D six-directional multi-layer avatar, so when creating new clothing and assets, we were required to separate the assets into different layers for the various angles and body parts. The assets on this page are a collection of just a few outfits I created for the game.

Styling & Profiling

The game used a 2D six-directional multi-layer avatar, so when creating new clothing and assets for the avatar, we would need to draw the clothing on different layers for each position. I either worked with rough sketches from the team or myself and developed the basic designs within Illustrator. Once we finalized the design, I moved the work into Flash, where I created the angles needed for the final outfits. I tested the outfits on our base avatar model before exporting the assets. I also created thumbnails of the outfits for the in-game store and character viewer before sending the assets to the development team for addition to the game.

Typically, we only need to draw four directions and flip the assets from the East to the West for the other positions. Still, there were times, especially with accessories, when we had to draw the additional angles to get the look just right.
